Dr.K.W.D.Ravi Chandar: Why Forensic Medicine should be taught in 2nd MBBS?

Comments by Professor  & Principal Dr.K.W.D.Ravi Chandar BSc, MBBS, DFM, MD, DNBFM, MFFMT

Student step into second MBBS with basic knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. The Para-clinical subjects are introduced in the second MMBS with the teaching of theory and practical’s. It is essential to teach Para-clinical subjects as they offer the basic concepts for learning and practising the Clinical subjects for the practise of Medicine by doctors.
The three subjects of Pharmacology, Pathology and Microbiology are of great help to a medical student for not only learning them but also to understand every clinical subject about its aetiology, pathology, investigation and treatment aspect   of every clinical programme.
Forensic Medicine is a conglomeration of all medical subjects along with wisdom of legal aspect of their clinical practise. In fact this subject is the only one which makes allopathy purely a scientific subject and thus differentiates it from the other systems of the practise of medicine.
Forensic medicine is the only subject which protects both the practitioners and the patients legally, ethically and scientifically, It is an integrated subject of the remaining three Para-clinical subjects and inseparable part of all the clinical subjects, the most ideal time for the teaching of Forensic Medicine along with its practical aspect is with the teaching off the other Para- clinical subjects.
The chapters of Thanatology, Trauma and Asphyxial  deaths   are understandable along with the teaching of general pathology. Toxicology goes hand in hand with Pharmacology and the Microbiology is mixed with the Forensic bacteriology, Entomology and Sacro- spropfageous insects as Forensic – indicators.
The Forensic osteology is an extension of anatomy and the odontology goes along with the teaching of dentistry.
The elementary knowledge     of Forensic sciences to a medical student gives them an edge over the non medical scientists just like the knowledge of ballistics to a medico-legist over the ballistic scientist due to his superior medical knowledge.
The aspects of clinical Forensic Medicine are integrated with Medicine and Surgery, just like the sexual jurisprudence with OBG. The knowledge of medical jurisprudence shapes the practise of all clinical subjects in the frame work off the law and elevates the social, ethical and moral status of the medical doctors above the standard of the lesser mortals.
Forensic Medicine is a guide, mentor and protector of medicine and it should be taught in the second MBBS, when a medical student has just stepped into the study of Para-clinical and Clinical subjects, so that the totality in the study of Para-clinical subjects is not only attained but the proper direction for the study and practise of clinical subjects is achieved.
Hence it is the responsibility of the IMC to retain the place of the study of Forensic Medicine in second MBBS and to maintain the duration of its study for three terms of six months each.
